The Implant

This method might work for you if… you are comfortable having a small device inserted into your arm by a healthcare provider.

The Implant: is a small rod (about the size of a matchstick) that is inserted under the skin of your upper arm. This type of birth control contains a synthetic version of progesterone, which are hormones (aka chemicals) that are naturally occurring in the body. The hormones in the ring regulate the hormonal variations in a body to reduce the risk of pregnancy. The implant most commonly causes lighter but irregular periods.

To use, a healthcare provider will numb the skin and then insert the device under the skin of your arm. This process will take around 5 minutes. In Canada, the implant can be used for up to 3 years.

The Implant is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy with typical use and cost is around $300 in Ottawa.
