A vasectomy is a permanent form of birth control that prevents sperm from leaving the penis to find an egg (or ova).
To get a vasectomy in Ontario, you need a referral to a specialized healthcare provider who can perform the surgery. The surgery cuts or blocks the tubes called the vas deferens. Sperm enters the vas deferens on their journey to leave the penis. The vas deferens can easily be accessed through the scrotum (or the ball sack) and therefore is often a relatively short procedure. If you need help getting connected to a healthcare provider that can answer your questions about a vasectomy, feel free to contact us at PPO!
If you have an Ontario Health Insurance Plan card (OHIP), the cost of the vasectomy is covered. If you have another form of health insurance, most of the procedure may also be covered. Vasectomies are 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
