Insight Theatre, a Planned Parenthood Ottawa program, is a unique non-profit, public education theatre program created by, for and about youth. Every year, a group of senior levels students from schools all over the city face the challenge of creating, directing and acting in their own show about sexual and reproductive health, and presenting it to their peers.
What is Insight Theatre?
Insight Theatre, a production of Planned Parenthood Ottawa, is a unique non-profit, public education theatre program created by, for and about youth. For over 30 years, Insight has harnessed the talent, energy and creativity of Ottawa youth and used it to empower others to make healthy and informed choices.
What information is covered?
Our trained and talented youth create their performance by following the Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines for Health and Physical Education – Grades 7 to 9.
The show is approximately 60 minutes in length, including a Question & Answer period with the audience, and is composed of a series of scenes that employ humour and drama to address the variety of pressures and choices facing youth today.
• Healthy relationships
• Healthy decision-making
• Unintended pregnancy options
• Body image
• Sexually transmitted infections
• GLBTTQ issues
These are only a few of the issues that Insight addresses with both courage and conviction.

At its core, Insight is a preventative education program: we recognize that not all of the information presented might be applicable to all students at this time in their lives; however, our objective is to arm them with important information now, so that when they or someone they know needs it, the students will be confident in their knowledge, and in their ability to make responsible, healthy decisions.
Why is Insight Theatre a valuable resource?
Insight Theatre does not attempt to replace the essential health education provided in schools; rather, our goal is to assist school health educators by offering a fun entry point into more in-depth discussions about health and healthy sexuality. Insight Theatre is designed as a supplementary program, presenting vital health information in a stimulating and entertaining way, made all the more accessible because it comes from the students themselves.
Studies have consistently shown that schools play an important role in ensuring a healthy future for young adults. As the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada notes, “…it is imperative that schools, in co-operation with parents, the community, and health-care professionals, play a major role in sexual health education and promotion”*.
In addition, while Insight follows Ministry Guidelines for Grade 7-9 students, the subject matter is relevant to all school-aged youth. As rates of reported condom use decline in older teens**, while STI rates continue to rise***, it is imperative that schools and public health organizations continue to educate not only junior grades, but also those older youth who are no longer required to take health education. Insight Theatre can quickly and effectively reach those youth who need updated information.
