An abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by a doctor removing the contents of the uterus (a “surgical abortion”), or through the use of miscarriage-inducing medication (a “medical abortion”).
Medical abortion can be obtained up to 8 weeks of pregnancy. Currently it uses the combination of two medications, methotrexate and misoprostol, to induce uterine contractions over several days that empty the contents of the uterus. Medical abortion is similar to an early miscarriage or a heavy period.

Surgical abortion can be performed between 7 and 20 weeks of pregnancy in Ottawa by a trained physician in a hospital or specialized clinic. The physician manually removes the contents of the uterus using a suction device while the patient is under local or general anesthesia. The actual procedure typically takes around 5-10 minutes.
