Community Outreach

Planned Parenthood Ottawa’s Community Outreach program aims to improve our reach and capacity to serve people who face barriers within sexual and reproductive health services. Our goal is to improve health outcomes by strengthening our partnerships to five underserved populations. The target groups are as follows; homelessness and under-housed, New Canadians, Indigenous people, youth and people with disabilities.

Our community outreach program includes:

Capacity Building

In addition to Planned Parenthood Ottawa’s publicly available education program, we train community workers to become more fluent around sexual and reproductive health. Training is free and can be booked through the outreach coordinator. Please click here for the list of trainings we provide.

Our trainings are;

Targeted: To enable service providers working with the target community groups to become a primary source of information around sexual and reproductive health.

Relevant: Through their established relationships with community members, participants will be able to build confidence to engage with others around having conversations within sexual health education.

Needs-based: We work with our partners to select and tailor topics to your needs; this is not a one-size-fits-all program.

Public Outreach

Planned Parenthood Ottawa attends and participates in various community fairs in Ottawa and surroundings. The fairs provide an excellent forum for us to meet members of the community and introduce our services. Health fairs are a good opportunity for us to meet our community members where they are and answer sexual and reproductive health related questions they would have.  We distribute brochures, flyers, condoms, and lubricants.

Referrals

The Community Outreach Program has allowed us to learn more about the numerous services and programs provided by other community agencies. We collaborates with other programs to provide comprehensive service to our target communities through referrals or joint program delivery.

To learn more about the program and participate in workshops for the service providers, please contact Nitsuh Mekonnen, the Coordinator of the program.
