Community Education Has Changes on the Way!

PPO’s Community Education program has successfully been delivering presentations and kiosks on healthy sexuality throughout the Ottawa-Carleton region for many years. During recent years, we found that we were getting the majority of presentation requests from local high schools. It is wonderful to go into a classroom and get a couple hours with students to talk about healthy sexuality, but we continued to have a nagging feeling that it wasn’t enough. There were still questions, still more topics to cover, and many other students that we weren’t reaching.

To address some of these issues and to help promote comprehensive sexual health education in schools, PPO will be launching ‘contraceptive teaching kits’, available for purchase in fall 2010! These kits will include: demo samples of all methods of contraception; a 200-page teaching manual that contains up-to-date sexual health information, lesson plan activities, supplementary readings, teaching tips and an overview of curriculum and guidelines; and additional pamphlets, fact sheets and articles.

This new social enterprise will also provide some additional funding to ensure that the Community Education program remains sustainable. Two of PPO’s counterparts out west, ‘Options’ in British-Columbia and ‘Sexual Health Access Alberta’ (now sold through the Calgary Sexual Health Centre), successfully run similar teaching kit programs.

In conjunction with the teaching kits, PPO will also be launching an in-service teacher training program geared towards secondary school teachers. This half-day training session will address strategies on how to give evidence-informed, non-judgmental and comprehensive sexual health education to students. It will cover attitudes and values, teaching tips, and how best to design a sexual health unit.

The PPO team is working fast and furiously to have these new services ready to launch this fall. Stay tuned for more details!
