Over 350 people will be lacing up their cleats and digging out their disc (also known as a Frisbee) to participate in the 7th Annual Spirit Ultimate Charity Tournament.
After a three year hiatus Spirit is back and Planned Parenthood Ottawa (PPO) has good reason to cheer on players!
First hosted in 2003, this one day coed fall tournament offers novice players annually the chance to play ultimate, enjoy a BBQ and beer, compete in disc contests, win prizes and much more.
The tournament’s primary goal is to raise funds for small local charities in the Ottawa area. With 100% of the tournament’s proceeds given to charities, as of 2008 donations from tournament sponsors and participants had reached just over $56,000.
There has been a focus on donating to health charities in the past however given that this year’s tournament organizers are Andréa Proulx and Tanara Pickard (PPO Board Members), the majority of proceeds from this year’s tournament will be donated to PPO.
Save the date, Saturday, September 15th 2012 and consider participating. Be a volunteer, put together a team or come out and cheer on players.
Never played? No problem! This year there is a new Learn to Play division. Walk through ultimate basics (e.g. throwing, field positioning and strategy) with experienced players. Then try out your new skills in tournament style 25 minute games – and enjoy the BBQ and beer too!
Board member Andréa goes in for the catch to prevent the yellow team fromscoring.
